The History Of Greg’s U-Pick Farm

Gregory Spoth has always had a passion for family and farming. Growing up on Transit Road with his five siblings, his family worked together on their small farm and built Greg’s Farm Market. This is where Greg’s love for production and produce market sales began!

In 1987, Greg began his own story. He married his wife Sandy on Valentine’s Day and together they purchased their farm from a man named Berry. The welcomed their first daughter, Megan, in November of that year and planted the first u-pick strawberries in the Spring. Planting strawberries is something Greg always wanted to do.

The 1990’s were a busy time for the Spoth Family. Greg and Sandy added three more children, twin boys – Ryan and Daniel, and their youngest Amy. With the support of their children, families, and friends that are like family, the business grew. Greg continued offering u-pick strawberries and Sandy recommended that the family plant blueberries. In 1994, the couple planted three acres.

As our family grew, Greg and Sandy raised our children on the farm and the contributions of the six of them allowed the farm to grow as well. Each year we continued to add a few acres of strawberries and enjoyed watching our children grow alongside the children of our customers.

Growing sweet corn for wholesale markets, selling produce off of a roadside wagon, and running the u-pick continued to drive momentum and bring new customers to the farm.

Greg’s son Ryan saw this as an opportunity to encourage the community of Greg’s customers that has always existed surrounding berries and sweet corn and brought home the idea of a CSA program from college.

Ryan, with the hesitant support of his family, launched the CSA at Greg’s U-Pick Farm in 2015. This program now hosts many members of the WNY community weekly to collect their allocation of the Greg’s harvest.

Today, Greg’s son, Ryan is raising his family on the farm and Greg is continuing to embrace the efforts of his children and grandchildren to bring Western New York fresh, quality, produce and experiences that he is proud of. The farm may have changed and grown but Greg’s passion for family, farming, and gathering around the seasons bounty have not.
